Werder & Shakhtar make Uefa final

Uefa Cup semi-final results:

Hamburg 2-3 Werder Bremen (3-3 on agg)
Shakhtar 2-1 Dynamo Kiev (3-2 on agg)

German side Werder Bremen will face Shakhtar Donetsk from Ukraine in the Uefa Cup final on 20 May after both won dramatic last-four ties on Thursday.

Shakhtar reached their first European final by beating countrymen Dynamo Kiev 2-1 thanks to Ilsinho's late winner.

Werder lost their first leg 1-0 at home to Hamburg but produced a fine comeback to win 3-2 despite Ivica Olic's opener.

Diego levelled, Claudio Pizarro fired in and then Frank Baumann headed in, before Olic managed a late consolation.

Bremen, who will be without Brazilian star Diego for the final after he picked up a booking that rules him out, will now play Shakhtar in Istanbul on Wednesday 20 May.

Yet that seemed unlikely when Hamburg went 2-0 ahead on aggregate as Olic was played through early on and kept his cool to slot home from inside the box.

But Bremen fought back brilliantly, getting themselves level on the night when Diego played a fine one-two with Pizarro before gloriously clipping home.

Diego saw a stunning 25-yard shot tipped on to the bar by Frank Rost before he got involved in a spat with Alex Silva and picked up a booking that means he misses the final.

But Werder continued to press and Pizarro turned away from two defenders outside the Hamburg box before lashing in, though Rost should have done better.

The goal rocked Hamburg and they conceded another when Piotr Trochowski's attempted goalline clearance was bravely headed in by Baumann.

The drama was not over as Olic nodded a cross into the ground and into the net with two minutes remaining, but Werder held on for a famous victory.

They will be joined in the last final before the competition is renamed the Uefa Europa League by Shakhtar, who could barely have left it any later to seal their victory.

After drawing 1-1 in the first leg, they went in front after 17 minutes when midfielder Rodrigues Jadson slotted in from just outside the area.

Ognjen Vukojevic had a goal disallowed as Dynamo fought back and soon after the break they levelled when Guinea striker Ismael Bangoura converted Olexandr Aliyev's fine pass.

With the match seemingly destined for extra-time Ilsinho won it in superb fashion, jinking in from the right and keeping his cool to shoot into the bottom corner.

In the process, Shakhtar became the first Ukraine team to reach the Uefa Cup final.

Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf:
"It was a great and open game, sensational. I think I have to congratulate both teams for that.

"But I think my team deserved to advance to the final because we were able to come back, we pushed forward and played with confidence.

"We always believed we could do it and we kept working until the end."

Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu:
"We have achieved something great. We are now a part of the history of European football.

"The result is just and deserved, the level of football corresponded to the high status of a Uefa Cup semi-final and the fans were treated to both a show and a battle.

"I needed to substitute Ilsinho because he had cramp, but I had a feeling he had not said his last word."
