By Andrew McKenzie

2219: "I thought we were brilliant," says Martin O'Neill. I could say the same about you lot. It's been a fun evening. Thanks for your input. Hopefully we can do it all again sometime.

2215: Right on cue, Danny the Stat with his Player Rater round-up:

Villa's marks were low at half-time - but they're a lot higher now. Three men have "broken the seven" (that'll catch on soon). Take some kind of bow, Gareth "7.24" Barry, Martin "7.63" Laursen and Ashley "7.76" Young. Well done to you all....
Aston Villa Player Rater

2210: FULL-TIME Braga 3-0 Portsmouth An awful night for Pompey as they slip to a convincing defeat. They are not in action in the next round of matches. Their next game is at home to AC Milan at the end of next month.

2208: We are into the last couple of minutes of stoppage time over in Portugal. It's been a very disappointing display by Harry Redknapp's side. They just haven't been at the races.

2206: FULL-TIME Aston Villa 2-1 Ajax
A good win for Villa courtesy of Gareth Barry's goal. Ajax were poor but Villa look like they have the makings of a side that could go far in this competition.

2204: Gabriel Agbonlahor is down on the Villa pitch after he collides with Kenneth Vermeer and the goalkeeper's studs look to go into the young Villa star's knee area. There was nothing malicious there, but it looks serious as he is stretchered off.

2203: GOAL Braga 3-0 Portsmouth
Alan notches a late goal to make certain of the victory, tapping in after the ball came back off the post.

2201: We're into the last minute and Gareth Barry gives the ball away in his own half. Fortunately Garbi doesn't take advantage as he criminally tries a shot from over 30 yards out and it's well over.

2159: "How come Ashley Young isn't an England regular? Surely he'd be more use than Stewart Downing for example." Robsoninho on 606
Join the debate on 606

On tonight's showing it is very difficult to see why Robsoninho. He looks like he's got it all.

2158: The lively James Milner is bundled over by Urby Emanuelson right on the edge of the box and Villa get a free-kick on the byeline. It gives them a good chance to fire one in but nothing comes of Gareth Barry's rather weak cross as Ajax clear.

2157: Ten minutes to go and it's not looking good for Pompey, who seem devoid of ideas. Braga have been solid at the back, smooth in midfield and clinical up front. Defeat beckons.

2155: Sampdoria have finished 2-1 winners at Partizan Belgrade in their Group C tie.

2152: Still no joy for Pompey as Papa Bouba Diop shoots over from just outside the penalty area.

2150: Almost an Ajax equaliser as Urby Emanuelson gets a hold of a left-foot strike which looks destined for the bottom corner, but Brad Friedel just gets enough to keep it out.

2148: Villa look like scoring from almost every Ashley Young corner and Kenneth Vermeer gets himself into a difficulty going searching for the latest inswinger.

2145: Carlos Cuellar gives away a silly free-kick just outside the box and earns a booking as well for his reckless lunge. From the free-kick Klaas Jan Huntelaar's effort is deflected and gives Brad Friedel a nervous moment before it loops over the bar.

2142: Villa are just shading it still but need to be a bit careful as Ajax looks dangerous when they break. Their Brazilian substitute Leonardo heads just off target.

2141: Portsmouth have gone to three at the back as they hunt for two goals - but they're not looking particularly like coming back into this one. Harry Redknapp has used all three subs.

2139: Gabriel Agbonlahor goes down claiming a penalty after a tussle in the box with Leonardo but the referee is not convinced. The Villa flyer has been a real nuisance for Ajax in this second half.

2136: Some results with no English ramifications: Sevilla 2-0 VfB Stuttgart, AS Nancy 3-0 Feyenoord, FC Copenhagen 1-3 St Etienne, Rosenborg 0-0 Club Brugge.

2134: AC Milan have won 3-1 at Heerenveen and will go top of Pompey's group, at least for now. Dinamo Zagreb also get off to a winning start, beating NEC 3-2 to join Udinese on three points in Tottenham's group.

2132: Ashley Young - and the Villa crowd - appeal for a penalty as his cross appears to hit a hand. Gareth Barry twists and turns but his shot is weak and easy for Kenneth Vermeer to gather.

2130: Nancy are running riot. Maurilio Helder has put them 3-0 up at home to Feyenoord.

2128: Re 2057 and chess. I think there is enough coverage of chess through football, Andy Bishop, Marlon King. Zat Knight, Queen of the South, Newcastle but no pawn!"
Daz W, Burbage, via text on 81111

2126: Late drama in Zagreb as two goals in three minutes from Bosko Balaban and Ivica Vrdoljak sees Dinamo take a 3-2 lead over NEC. Not sure whether that's good, bad or indifferent news for Spurs.

2123: Villa almost get a third as Ajax keeper Kenneth Vermeer pulls off a great save, but then almost carries the ball over the line from a Martin Laursen header.

2122: GOAL Braga 2-0 Portsmouth
Portsmouth's uphill task just got a little steeper as Braga get a second goal within 90 seconds of the second half starting. Wason Renteria turns his marker and sends in a low shot. All to do for Pompey now.

2121: Tim Janssen has put NEC 2-1 ahead away to Dinamo Zagreb. They have about 10 minutes to play in that game, which is in Tottenham's Group D.

2120: The second half has kicked off in Braga.

2119: What a half! Just like watching Brazil. OK maybe not but still a great half from the Villa! How come Carew is out? Hope it's not serious! Anonymous, via text on 81111

Carew was left out as he has been ill in the last few days. It can't be that serious as he was seen chatting to a young blonde in the stands in the opening half.

2117: We are back under way at Villa Park.

2116: Harry Kewell's goal is enough to hand the three points to Galatasaray, who beat Olympiacos 1-0.

2113: A few goals to catch up on while you sup on your half-time bovril, or whatever. Filippo Inzaghi has had his opening goal taken away from him, it's been given as an own goal by Calvin Jong-a-Pin. Inzaghi has scored the third though, making it 3-0 to AC Milan. St Etienne have gone 3-1 up in Copenhagen, Hertha Berlin are 1-1 with Benfica and Sampdoria lead Partizan Belgrade.

2108: We've just heard from Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate. Some strong words from the England international. Asked if they were in a relegation fight, he replied "one million per cent".

2105: Cesar Santin has scored from the spot for FC Copenhagen, but they trail St Etienne by 2-1.

2104: The half-time whistle goes in Portugal. Pompey trail 1-0 courtesy of that eighth-minute goal from Luis Aguiar.

2103: Danny the Stat time:

Thanks to the phenomenon known as "Rater Lag" (it'll catch on), Villa goal hero Gareth Barry is languishing on 6.06 - the third lowest in the Villa team. Brad Friedel is tops on 7.94. I refuse - I simply refuse point blank - to believe that this will not change. Get involved.
Aston Villa Player Rater

2102: Julien Feret have doubled Nancy's lead at home to Feyenoord in Group H.

2100: That is the half-time whistle at Villa. Meanwhile, we still have a minute of injury time to play over in Portugal.

2059: GOAL Aston Villa 2-1 Ajax
A great time to get a goal, right on the half-time whistle. A sweeping move down the left involving Nicky Shorey and Ashley Young ends with Gareth Barry stroking into the bottom corner with a sweet finish.

2057: "Why doesn't the BBC cover chess? I don't see a link for Anand vs kramnik on the sports homepage or for chess on the left hand side panel - it is even not covered in 'other sports' link. Anand is leading Kramnik in world chess championship 5-2 with 5 games to go."

I don't know mate. Do you want me to check it out?

2055: "Re 2033. After all of their sendings off, Tottenham are probably bottom of the fair play league make it bottom of three leagues!" Steve, Hampton Court, via text on 81111

2052: Goal for Nancy with Monsef Zerka putting them 1-0 up against Feyenoord. In Manchester City's group Steve McClaren's FC Twente have got off to a winning start, beating Racing Santander 1-0.

2050: Oh Ashley Young. James Milner sets one up on a plate for him after doing well to whip in a cross from the right, but his team-mate scuffs his volley. Stuart Pearce looks on from the stands with what looks to be the reddest nose outside of Old Trafford.

2049: Pompey are coming back into things. Jermain Defoe is sent clear but his shot is saved by Eduardo - then the keeper blocks another shot from a tight angle from Defoe.

2048: "Villa are looking very shaky at the back. Time to switch to man-marking from set pieces?" Chewie, via text on 81111

2046: Braga go close to a second goal with a header from Nascimento from deep inside the penalty area misses to the left.

2045: "It looks like Villa might take Ajax to the cleaners!" hansandersen on 606
Join the debate on 606

That might have worked about 10 minutes ago. As it is the Dutch side are wiping the floor with Villa now.

2044: Almost a second for Ajax as Villa's defence is all over the place and Klaas Jan Huntelaar almost pounces at the back post.

2041: Not much news from Pompey's game I'm afraid to say. Peter Crouch gets a shot in but it is saved by Braga keeper Carvalho Eduardo.

2039: Lamine Diarra has got an equaliser for Partizan Belgrade in their home game with Sampdoria. It's 1-1 now. It has no bearing on any of the British sides, but just so you know.

2036: GOAL Aston Villa 1-1 Ajax
Villa throw away their great start with some poor defending. Thomas Vermaelen is at the front of a queue of three Ajax players to head in from Urby Emanuelson's corner.

2033: "Does that make Spurs bottom of two tables?" Phil, Surrey, via text on 81111

2030: We get the first real sign of Klaas Jan Huntelaar but Luke Young is quickly in to close him down and clear.

2027: Martin Laursen is proving a massive handful for the Ajax defence. He gets on the end of another inswinging corner but this time his header is over the bar.

2026: Villa look well up for this one tonight. They're well on top at present as Nicky Shorey gets forward to send a cross over for James Milner.

2023: GOAL Braga 1-0 Portsmouth
Pompey go behind to a stunning free-kick from Luis Aguiar. The Uruguayan strikes from over 30 yards out.

2021: GOAL Aston Villa 1-0 Ajax
Marvellous start for Villa as Martin Laursen heads them in front. The big defender gets on the end of a Ashley young corner to crash a header home. It came at the end of a spell of dominance from the home side.

2020: Better late than never, I hope, but here's some words of factual wisdom from Danny the Stat:

A poor set of scores for the Spurs players - a touch harsh? After all, Udinese are not a bunch of spanners, they're a pretty sound Italian footballing unit. Anyway, it's mostly fours and fives for Tottenham, with Ledley King the top man on 5.88. Furious at the injustice of it all? Get involved...
Player Rater

2017: Sounds like a cracking atmosphere at Villa Park. We'll be keeping you up-to-date as much as possible from Pompey's game away to Braga, but for some reason we have no pictures from Portugal. Still, at least we've had more joy than last night.

2015: Aston Villa and Pompey get their matches under way.

2013: Some words from Milan vice president Adriano Galliani about the impending capture of David Beckham. "The deal is not done yet," he said. "We have to define everything with his lawyers and the Galaxy. I'm confident but it is absolutely not closed."

2010: Sevilla have doubled their lead, with Dirnei Renato adding to VfB Stuttgart's worries. The Germans are under severe pressure...

2009: An own goal from Santos Carlos has levelled things at 1-1 between Dinamo Zagreb and NEC. That's in Tottenham's group by the way.

2006: Pompey and Villa both about to get their games under way. Meanwhile, in Pompey's group Filippo Inzaghi and Gennaro Gattuso have put AC Milan 2-0 up at Heerenveen.

2003: It is not all bad for Juande Ramos. His old side Sevilla are leading 1-0 at home to Stuttgart, with Ndri Romaric scoring after 15 minutes.

2001: "I've got a few more numbers for Ramos: P-cuarenta y cinco!" Will, Liverpool, via text on 81111

You lot can be cruel.

1957: FULL-TIME Udinese 2-0 Tottenham
An opening defeat for Tottenham against a clearly useful Udinese side. But you have to say Spurs made a significant contribution to their own downfall.

1956: There are some glum faces in the Spurs end at the Stadio Friuli. We're into injury time now and their misery is nearly over.

1955: We have 20 minutes until kick-off in the other two games involving English side. Aston Villa have made two changes, bringing in defenders Luke Young and Nicky Shorey for centre-back Curtis Davies and striker John Carew.

1954: Some more team news from Pompey as they are are without Lassana Diarra (knee) and Younes Kaboul (back), while Noe Pamarot keeps his place at left-back with Nadir Belhadj on the bench.

1951: GOAL Udinese 2-0 Tottenham
Game over for Spurs. It comes directly from Darren Bent's chance at the other, with Udinese breaking brilliantly with pace down the left and the ball eventually being slipped into Simone Pepe. The substitute shows great nerve before sidefooting in off the post.

1950: A great chance for Spurs and a great piece of play as Giovani gets to the byeline and crosses over for Darren Bent. The striker gets in a great header but it is brilliantly saved.

1949: In the other game in Tottenham's group, Dinamo Zagreb are 1-0 up against NEC (are they from Birmingham?). Mario Mandzukic was the scorer.

1947: "Re 1932. That would work if they weren't already down to diez!" Matt Gibbs, Dover, via text on 81111

Ten out of 10 for spotting that one, Matt.

1945: Former Leeds and Liverpool winger Harry Kewell has pounced for Galatasaray. They lead Olimpiacos 1-0 in Turkey.

1944: TEAMS:

Braga: Eduardo, Frechaut, Moises, Alberto Rodriguez, Evaldo, Vandinho, Alan, Matheus, Aguiar, Renteria, Meyong. Subs: Mario Felgueiras, Mossoro, Paulo Cesar, Jorginho, Stelvio Cruz, Cesar Peixoto, Joao Pereira.

Portsmouth: James, Campbell, Pamarot, Armand Traore, Distin, Davis, Diop, Hreidarsson, Little, Defoe, Crouch. Subs: Ashdown, Utaka, Mvuemba, Hughes, Kanu, Belhadj, Wilson.

1943: TEAMS:

Aston Villa: Friedel, Luke Young, Cuellar, Laursen, Shorey, Reo-Coker, Petrov, Barry, Milner, Agbonlahor, Ashley Young. Subs: Guzan, Sidwell, Harewood, Davies, Knight, Salifou, Gardner.

Ajax: Vermeer, Silva, Oleguer, Vermaelen, Emanuelson, Lindgren, Sarpong, Vertonghen, Suarez, Huntelaar, Gabri. Subs: Vonk, Van Der Wiel, Cvitanich, Leonardo, Sno, Anita, Schilder.

1940: Giovani earns a free-kick for Spurs about 35 yards out but Gareth Bale is again off target with his centre. They have had so many chances but I am struggling to think of one decent set-piece all night.

1938: Gareth Bale is not having one of his best evenings. The Welshman follows up a smart bit of defending by then needlessly giving away a corner. Heurelho Gomes comes and fails to collect and he is lucky that referee Felix Brych sees a foul out of nothing and Gomes's blushes are spared.

1934: Didier Zokora blocks a shot with his arms and Udinese fancy their chances of a penalty. It's not given and Spurs are still in this.

1932: "Re: 1905. Thanks for that. Was just doing my Spanish homework! Ramos should try uno uno nueve, cos they need goals!" Ricky, Harrow, via text on 81111

My colleague behind me keeps on saying vamos Ramos. Is Spanish the new English all of a sudden?

1930: Giovani is on for Jonathan Woodgate, with the defender looking like he might have picked up a knock. The Mexican is straight into the action and almost gets on the end of a throughball.

1928: Spurs get caught short at the back as Alan Hutton lets in Antonio Di Natale. The Italian looks to have brilliantly lobbed Heurelho Gomes but the keeper pulls off a stunning and crucial save.

1925: Things could have been even worse for Spurs as the ball falls to Maurizio Domizzi at the back post and Heurelho Gomes pulls off a cracking point-blank save.

Not what Spurs needed. Not by a long shot. Jamie O'Hara picks up two bookings inside a minute and his game ends early. Both fouls were on Alexis Sanchez. The first one was a questionable one but he can have few complaints about the second as he goes in a bit wild and late on Sanchez.

1921: The other game in Villa's group has ended and it's a win for Hamburg, who were 2-1 winners over MSK Zilina.

1919: A bit of early team news from Aston Villa. Apparently John Carew has been ruled out. More details when we get it.

1917: Udinese are giving Spurs plenty of set-piece practice in and around around their box, but so far they have failed to do much with it. Some early signs that Luka Modric may see plenty of the ball.

1916: Tottenham start the second half the better of the two sides but Udinese are close to a second. Fabio Quagliarella gets a low shot in that Heurelho Gomes does well to palm around the post.

1913: Just to keep you up-to-date on the action elsewhere: Schalke beat PSG 3-1 in Manchester City's group. FC Twente lead 1-0 in the other group game, with Romano Denneboom getting his name on the scoresheet - and what a name it is.

1911: The second half is under way and Juande Ramos has made a change. Luka Modric is on for Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

1905: "Ramos! I have three useful numbers for you: cuatro, cuatro, dos!" Stu, Brighton via text on 81111

Midway through that half my Spanish phrase of the day email popped in my inbox. It was "Los jugadores se encuentran de vacaciones" (the players are on holiday). Make of that what you will...

1902: It would not be half-time without some chat from Danny the Stat:

Oh dear, Heurelho Gomes. As if your yellow card and your giving away of a penalty wasn't enough, now this. You find yourself rock bottom of Player Rater with a 2.79. That's out of 10. Ooops. Antonio Di Natale, meanwhile, is top dog with 7.67. The beauty of this? It can all change...

1858: That was quite an entertaining half of footy. As I'm looking at the glass half full tonight, I would say that was far from disastrous, aside from Heurelho Gomes's blunder. Juande Ramos's side had some decent chances and there definitely looks like more goals.

1854: It's half-time in Italy. Not a hint of injury-time. I think the ref must have another booking later tonight.

The Spurs gags do the rounds in our review of the week

1848: A decent chance for Spurs from a corner that drops to Alan Hutton at the backpost, with Udinese's keeper out flapping and failing to get near the ball. Hutton can't get it down though and a promising move ends with Jamie O'Hara blazing over.

1844: "Ramos has absolutely no character, I don't think his players know who is managing them, he has no identifiable management style. He needs to go and be replaced by Allardyce who knows how to deal with relegation scraps." Travelsick on 606

Any thoughts Spurs fans? How do you fancy Big Sam at White Hart Lane?

1842: A third goal for Schalke as Halil Altintop gets his name on the scoresheet. Another goal for the Germans and it will be Schalke 04 4-0 PSG. Meanwhile, Spurs go close with a Gareth Bale curling free-kick that just flies over.

1839: Worrying times for Spurs as Heurelho Gomes is looking shaky and Udinese are not shy in taking advantage. Marco Motta fires one in from well outside the box that Gomes should hold, but only pushes it out and he is lucky there's no-one there to finish the rebound.

1835: That is an absolute disaster for Spurs after they were just beginning to get on top. Juande Ramos will be furious with his keeper for a needless goal. Aleksandar Lukovic of Udinese was also booked for dissent in the middle of that, by the way.

1832: GOAL Udinese 1-0 Tottenham
Antonio Di Natale puts Udinese in front from the spot after Heurelho Gomes has a shocker. The Spurs keeper fails to deal with a simple backpass and ends up fouling Fabio Quagliarella. He is perhaps fortunate to get away with a yellow card.

1828: It's looking better for Spurs as Aaron Lennon gets into the area and he fires a shot in that Samir Handanovic makes a bit of a hash of punching away. Dodgy keeper alert.

1827: Jamie O'Hara shows some ambition with a strike from long range and it's not a bad one, but just too high to test the Udinese goal.

1826: Antonio Di Natale finds a worrying amount of room down the left. He fails to find a decent cross and it is straight into the welcome arms of Heurelho Gomes.

1824: The first real chance for Spurs as Jermaine Jenas goes on a decent run down the right before putting over a decent ball into the area that Darren Bent cannot finish.

1821: I'm feeling the positive vibes about Jamie O'Hara on the texts and 606. It's more of a mixed bag about the absence of David Bentley. If you're just tuning in, Bentley has not even made the bench tonight.

1820: Aaron Lennon gets his first chance to do some damage, but he goes tumbling down the right flank and German referee Felix Brych is not buying that one.

1818: Hamburg have doubled their lead away to MSK Zilina on the stroke of half-time through Ivica Olic.

1816: I've just been reading about Udinese coach Pasquale Marino and he sounds like he likes his side to attack. Apparently he favours a 3-4-3 formation, so we may get some goals. They are looking impressive so far.

1814: Udinese have started this well and Ledley King is forced to head a dangerous cross behind for a corner. From the inswinger Heurelho Gomes is less than convincing with his punch.

1813: The first chance of the game goes to Udinese as Andrea Coda finds himself unmarked in the area and glances a header just past the post.

1811: There's a lively pace to the game early on. Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes takes a bit of a bash on the head from Fabio Quagliarella. It's nothing serious.

1809: They have kicked off a minute early at the Stadio Friuli. Should be a tasty one.

1805: "Why oh why is Ramos playing Jamie O'Hara? He only knows how to pass backwards. He ought to be playing for Wasps not Spurs!" Rob, Gloucester, via text on 81111

Rob mate, I said positive vibes.

1759: The Spurs jokes have already started over on 606. Sorry to be a spoilsport, but surely they have all been done already. I'm looking for some positive vibes tonight. It's the Uefa Cup and Tottenham are unbeatable in this competition...this season, so far. Also, Juande Ramos owns this competition. He's won it as many times as Real Madrid.

1755: German international Kevin Kuranyi has notched a second for Schalke, just before half-time. Is he the only Brazilian-born player to ever play for Germany with a middle name of Dennis? I suspect so.

1752: "I'm worried...Modric and Giovani on the bench, Bentley not even amongst the subs...this could be game over for Ramos tonight. Nevertheless, come on you Spurs!" Jon, Maidstone, via text on 81111

1748: In Moscow, two early goals from Alan Dzagoev have given CSKA a 2-0 half-time lead at home to Deportivo. Mladen Petric has given Hamburg a 1-0 lead away to MSK Zilina in Aston Villa's group.

1745: We have about 25 minutes before Spurs get the British interest off and running, but there's already been some goals elsewhere. An own goal from Larrys Mabiala has given Schalke a 1-0 lead at home to PSG in Manchester City's group (of death?). City have the week off, with the other two teams in their group - FC Twente and Racing Santander - starting at 1900 BST.

1742: So good news about Ledley King, but no place for David Bentley. Has that got anything to do with his outspoken comments this week?

1737: Some team news from my colleague Chris Bevan, who has just about recovered from last night's drama:

Ledley King replaces the cup-tied Vedran Corluka and returns to Tottenham's defence after missing Sunday's defeat with Stoke because of ongoing knee problems. Benoit Assou-Ekotto comes in at left-back, allowing Gareth Bale to push forward in place of Luka Modric on the left, and Jamie O'Hara replaces David Bentley in midfield.

1733: TEAMS:

Udinese: Handanovic, Motta, Coda, Domizzi, Lukovic, Inler, D'Agostino, Isla, Sanchez, Quagliarella, Di Natale. Subs: Koprivec, Sala, Ferronetti, Pasquale, Obodo, Pepe, Floro Flores.

Tottenham: Gomes, Hutton, King, Woodgate, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, Zokora, Jenas, O'Hara, Bale, Bent. Subs: Cesar, Dawson, Gilberto, Gunter, Modric, Campbell, Giovani.

1731: First up, an apology on behalf of BBC Sport. Last night we had a disaster of the technical variety. Issues way beyond my tiny brain meant we were unable to bring you updates for the best part of the evening. It seems that the cables in question have been fixed and we're good to go again. But just in case, I'll be typing with my fingers crossed...

1730: I don't know about you, but something has been missing the last two weeks. Thursdays just aren't the same without a bit of Uefa Cup action to brighten up a generally uneventful day.

As the evenings draw in, thank heavens we have Uefa's Uefa Cup group stages to see us through winter.
