Middlesbrough rode their luck against Roma to reach the Uefa Cup quarter-finals on the away-goals rule.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's powerful header extended Boro's aggregate lead.

But Roma, who had hit the bar before Boro's goal, equalised through Amantino Mancini's clever shot on 43 minutes.

In the second half, Mark Schwarzer made two great saves before Mancini converted a penalty, but Boro survived as Philippe Mexes was sent off late on.

Mancini had a quiet start but, in a purple patch either side of half-time, he caused Boro all sorts of problems.

Schwarzer kept the visitors in the match, making point-blank saves to deny the Brazilian and then Daniele De Rossi.

Honduran winger Edgar Alvarez also proved a constant threat for Roma in the first half, time and again getting past Emanuel Pogatetz.

On 18 minutes, an Alvarez cross reached Mancini, who was superbly tackled by Andrew Davies.

While Alvarez, who also went close with a shot, provided the danger from the flanks, Roma full-back Cesare Bovo looked to shoot whenever he approached the Boro penalty area.

After trying his luck with a free-kick, Bovo thundered a shot against the crossbar, with Schwarzer unable to get anywhere near the ball.

Having survived those scares, Hasselbaink gave Boro some breathing space with a stunning strike.

When Stewart Downing, watched by England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, curled in a cross from the left, Hasselbaink's dash to the near post enabled him to get ahead of Mexes and arc a header over Curci.

Hasselbaink's goal meant Roma needed to score three times to win the tie.

But, two minutes before the interval, the Italian side scored following a well-worked move down the Boro right.

De Rossi, Cristian Chivu and Rodrigo Taddei combined to provide space for Mancini, who cleverly clipped the ball past Schwarzer.

If Mancini's goal showed his elan, Roma's Brazilian had displayed his darker side earlier when he deliberately elbowed Gaizka Mendieta.

At times, the game threatened to boil over, notably when a posse of players from each side squared up to one another, a confrontation that ended with bookings for George Boateng and Mexes.

And in the game's closing stages Mexes picked up a second yellow card for a bad tackle on Downing.

Mancini's penalty, after Stefano Okaka Chuka went down under Ray Parlour's challenge, ensured that Boro had to survive the rest of the game without conceding.

But they regrouped and Roma thereafter struggled to trouble Schwarzer in the way they had done in that torrid period after the interval.
