Houllier unveiled as boss of Lyon

Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has been unveiled as the new coach of French champions Olympique Lyon.

The 57-year-old Frenchman will replace Paul Le Guen, who announced earlier this month that he was leaving the club after three seasons in charge.

Houllier was dismissed as Anfield manager in May 2004 after six seasons.

"We are very happy to greet Gerard as the club's new coach - I am privately convinced it is the right choice," said Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.

Former France coach Houllier led Liverpool, who won the Champions League under Rafael Benitez this season, to glory in the FA Cup, Uefa Cup and Carling Cup in 2001.

The Reds also won the European Super Cup and the Charity Shield in the same year.

Houllier has signed a two-year deal, with an option of a third year, and dismissed any lingering doubts over his health after heart surgery in 2001.

"Football is my life, my passion and my desire - and when you get a club like Lyon making a proposal like this you just don't turn it down," he said.

"The break has done me good but I needed to get back into football.

"Lyon is a big club, they've won the title four times in a row and played six consecutive Champions League campaigns.

"I'm facing a big challenge here as finishing second in the league would be a failure.

"But I really am fine. I checked with my surgeon and a surgeon at Lyon before I took the job.

"I've learnt from my experience and I know how to balance my workload and when to take a break."
