Newcastle secured their place in the second round of the Uefa Cup after beating NAC Breda 1-0 in Holland.

The Magpies were never in serious danger of losing their 5-0 first leg lead, although Breda regained some pride with a battling display.

Indeed, the Dutch side almost took a first-half lead when defender Marcel Koning's header hit the post.

But as the game meandered towards a goalless draw, Laurent Robert struck to earn the Magpies a 6-0 aggregate win.

Magpies boss Sir Bobby Robson rang the changes, resting skipper Alan Shearer, midfielder Gary Speed and keeper Shay Given for the match.

The home team began well, and Johan Elmander was particularly lively, although Hugo Viana saw an early chance for Newcastle saved.

Newcastle lacked the fluidity of the first-leg, and Orlando Engelaar hit a free-kick wide for Breda as the Dutch side tried to break through.

And they were unlucky on 42 minutes as Koning's header bounced off the post with Magpies' keeper Steve Harper well beaten.

To their credit, Breda continued to press after the break, despite the tie effectively being over and Stefano Seedorf mis-kicked when well place.

But the game became increasingly scrappy, and Laurent Robert's late winner on 86 minutes merely confirmed Newcastle's safe passage through to round two.
