Bothroyd signs for Perugia
Jay Bothroyd

Jay Bothroyd has joined Italian Serie A club Perugia on a three-year contract.

The 21-year-old left Coventry at the end of last season after being made available on a free transfer, and impressed in a trial match for Perugia.

Bothroyd's move means he could be lining up next season alongside the son of Libyan leader Colonel Ghadaffi.

Perugia signed playmaker Saadi Al Ghadaffi earlier this summer in a move which was criticised in several quarters as a publicity stunt but which the club insisted was a deal earned on merit.

For Bothroyd the deal represents a huge leap from Nationwide Division One into the elite Italian league, but he has top-flight experience from his first season with Coventry.

He signed for 1m from Arsenal, where he failed to become a first-team regular, but Coventry were relegated within 12 months.

He scored 11 goals last season as Coventry finished a lowly 20th in the table, before being told he was surplus to requirements by boss Gary McAllister.

In moving to Italy, Bothroyd is following in the footsteps of the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Des Walker and Paul Ince.
