There two clubs' fans have had a close relationship
Celtic fans chief Eddie Toner insists that the spit aimed at supporters by Liverpool forward El Hadji Diouf will not sour the great relationship between the two clubs.

Senegal international Diouf was caught on camera spitting at Celtic supporters during Thursday's 1-1 draw in the Uefa Cup.

The 22-year-old is now the subject of a report sent by Strathclyde Police to the Procurator Fiscal.

But Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has already apologised for Diouf's actions and Toner, general secretary of the Celtic Supporters' Association, said: "I am sure the authorities will deal with him in the appropriate manner.

"The Celta Vigo player who spat at John Hartson in a previous round was banned for four matches.

"I haven't seen the incident myself yet, but I wouldn't like to think the incident would sour the relationship between the fans.

"At the end of the day, there wasn't a problem between the supporters. It was one player who maybe doesn't seem to appreciate the relationship between the fans.

"I certainly don't think it will cause any problems for next week, or in the future.

"I am sure we will be welcomed down there next week.

"There has been a long-standing mutual respect between the fans and I'm sure that will continue."

Both clubs come from a similar tradition and those ties were strengthened by numerous testimonial and friendly matches.

"You'll Never Walk Alone" has been adopted as an anthem by their respective supports and Gerry Marsden, who had a hit with the song in the 60s, was at Celtic Park to lead the communal rendition of the No.1 before kick-off.
