Lineker's tournament verdict: Spain

By Gary Lineker
BBC's Match of the Day presenter

Spain, why do you do it to yourselves? It's beyond me.

Every time, they are listed among the favourites and I, for one, expected them to cruise through the group stages with arch rivals Portugal.

It's staggering to think players of the calibre of Raul, Fernando Morientes, Ivan Helguera and Iker Casillas can go out of a tournament so soon.

When it came down to it, you've got to say their lack of goalscoring was really to blame.

Spain managed just two goals in three games - one from Morientes, the other from Juan Carlos Valeron - and that's simply not good enough at the top level.

Hopefully, they'll learn their lesson before the next big tournament. Sadly, I doubt it.
