Bruckner hails understudies

Czech Republic coach Karel Bruckner
Czech Republic coach Karel Bruckner paid tribute to his understudies who knocked Germany out of Euro 2004.

Bruckner took advantage of the Czechs' qualification for the last eight by resting as many as nine key players.

The Czech coach said: "There is no B team, they are all members of the Czech national squad, and they played for their prestige.

"We took this match very seriously and I'd like to thank my players for a moral performance."

Bruckner added: "Some people doubted our motivation for this match but we always give our all in matches, even friendlies.

"The players out there tonight were performing for their own pride and showed that such speculation was misplaced."

Germany midfielder Michael Ballack, who scored their goal against the Czechs, said their lack of goals was their undoing.

"The main problem is that we didn't score any goals," said Ballack.

"We had lots of chances but didn't get any in the goal. We've played worse games in the last few years than this."

"We did our best but it wasn't enough," added the Germany midfielder.
