England v France player ratings
Marks out of 10 for England and France after the dramatic Euro 2004 Group B game in Lisbon.

David James - 6: Lucky to avoid a red card after clattering into Thierry Henry for the last-gasp penalty. Had little else to do.

Gary Neville - 7: Coped well with the attacking threat from France, but hardly got forward with England desperately defending for much of the second half.

Sol Campbell - 8: A dominant display from the Arsenal defender, who appeared to be first to every ball that came into the penalty box.

Ledley King - 8: An assured performance in his first competitive match. Formed a solid partnership with Campbell as England kept Henry and Trezeguet quiet.

Ashley Cole - 7: Kept Arsenal team-mate Robert Pires at bay, but his defensive duties meant his attacking threat was limited.

David Beckham - 6: His free-kick set up the goal, but that was as good as it got. He saw his penalty saved and was subdued otherwise.

Paul Scholes - 7: Some tidy touches in midfield but never came close to ending his scoring drought. Substituted in the second half.

Steven Gerrard - 5: An unspectacular display from the Liverpool captain - until his dreadful back pass found Henry in the box.

Frank Lampard - 7: His confidence soared after the goal. Made some crucial tackles in his own half when England were under pressure in the second half.

Wayne Rooney - 8: His rampaging run into the penalty area tempted Silvestre into a reckless tackle. Always made himself available and held the ball up well.

Michael Owen - 5: Had one early half-chance but was marked out of the game thereafter and replaced by Darius Vassell in the second half.

Darius Vassell (replaced Michael Owen, 69 mins): With England pinned back in their own half, Vassell's pace up front was wasted.

Emile Heskey (replaced Paul Scholes, 76 mins): His only memorable contribution was the needless foul on Makelele which allowed Zidane to equalise.

Owen Hargreaves (replaced Wayne Rooney, 76 mins): Brought on to shore up the midfield but could not stem the flow of French attacks.

Fabien Barthez - 8: Could do nothing about Lampard's goal and made a superb, athletic save from Beckham's penalty.

William Gallas - 7: Linked up well with Robert Pires on the right and made some well-timed challenges, particularly in the first half.

Lilian Thuram - 6: Part of a French line often exposed by Wayne Rooney's powerful drives, but was solid enough and kept Owen quiet.

Mikael Silvestre - 6: Was beaten by Lampard for the first goal and panicked when Rooney bore down on goal, conceding a penalty with a reckless challenge.

Bixente Lizarazu - 7: Gave away the free-kick which led to Lampard's goal, but got forward well as France pressed for an equaliser in the second half.

Robert Pires - 7: Looked dangerous before England's goal but drifted out of the game. Booked for a tackle from behind on Paul Scholes.

Patrick Vieira - 7: An energetic display in midfield from the Arsenal captain. Never gave the ball away and kept driving his team forward.

Claude Makelele - 6: Typically battling display from the Chelsea midfielder, playing against club team-mate Lampard.

STAR MAN - Zinedine Zidane - 9:
Showed some sublime touches and never gave up. Scored a superb free-kick and kept calm to score the winning penalty.

David Trezeguet - 6: Missed a headed chance early in the first-half, but hardly saw the ball after that, despite France pressing forward in the second half.

Thierry Henry - 6: Not his usual dynamic self and was largely kept quiet - but was lurking outside the box to earn the winning penalty.

Sylvain Wiltord (replaced Robert Pires, 75): Came on for the tiring Pires, but had little opportunity to impress.

Willy Sagnol (replaced Mikael Silvestre, 79): Not given enough time to make much impact, but made himself a nuisance at set-pieces.
