The Football Association is to investigate claims that a smoke bomb was thrown at the end of Sunday's match between West Brom and Wolves.

The missile was allegedly thrown after the final whistle by a Wolves fan in the Smethwick End at the Hawthorns.

It landed in the East Stand, which was occupied by West Brom fans.

Eight arrests were made: two for attempted pitch invasion, five for public order offences and one for throwing a missile towards the pitch.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said on Monday: "There was an atmosphere of enthusiastic and friendly competition between the vast majority of supporters at the match. However, there was some trouble immediately after the match and some pockets of disorder later in the day.

"A breakdown on the Metro at Black Lake caused a delay to some fans before the match. Police officers escorted them safely to the stadium and they arrived midway into the first half.

A statement added: "Investigations will continue to identify anybody else who may have been involved in disorder. West Midlands Police will pursue the use of Football Banning Orders to prevent those presenting a risk to the public from attending future football matches."

The FA, whose investigation is ongoing said: "We will be seeking the observations and report from our FA crowd control adviser, who was present on Sunday."

Wolves had taken the lead through Jamie O'Hara's curling shot but Carlos Vela struck a late equaliser to ensure that Roy Hodgson avoided defeat in his first game after taking over as Baggies manager.

Supporters in the home end responded to the alleged smoke bomb by throwing objects back at the section filled by Wolves supporters.
