Redknapp slams players after loss

Interview - Spurs boss Harry Redknapp

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp was highly critical of his players after seeing his side lose 1-0 at Wigan.

"At the moment we have some players who cost this football club a lot of money and they need to be better for the team," said Redknapp.

"They are supposed to be quality players - and they have got to show that on the football pitch.

"If you look at our results - two points from eight games - it cannot always be the manager's fault, can it?"

The defeat leaves Tottenham in the Premier League's bottom three - and Redknapp was particularly angry about conceding another late goal.

Maynor Figueroa scored in injury time to give Wigan victory and Redknapp added: "It is three times away from home - we went to Newcastle and got beaten in injury time, we went to West Brom and conceded a goal with a couple of minutes to go and again today.

"It cannot be right. We have to defend for our lives. We gave a soft corner away from a poor defensive header and then they came in and wanted to get on the end of it a little bit more than we did - and that was the result.

"It looked like it would peter out for a draw, which would have been a decent enough point, but we didn't play with the quality that I think we are capable of.

"There are still an awful lot [of players] who can do a lot better than they are doing. We need some improved performances, especially away from home.

"We have thrown three games away - in the last minutes of each game - that cannot be right."

Wigan boss Steve Bruce admitted he thought the game had "0-0 written all over it" but was understandably delighted that his side stuck to their task to earn a win that makes them the form team in the Premier League.

"I would have accepted a draw," he revealed. "However, I thought we were the side that were pushing and I cannot remember Spurs making an attack in the second half.

"We weren't particularly impressive today but we kept on wanting it and driving forward and we got the result and the reward in the end.

"We are difficult to play against - we have a mentality and belief amongst us that to beat us you have to play well.

"If we keep that attitude and the squad we have, then we will give anyone a run for their money."
