Charlton were forced to settle for a draw in a game which they dominated against a resolute Fulham side.

Shaun Bartlett missed a tap-in chance and then had his shot on the turn from close range stopped at the near post.

Paul Konchesky went close with a powerful shot which was well saved by the excellent Edwin van der Saar.

Fulham's best chance saw Zat Knight's powerful header go wide before Louis Boa Morte's blocked volley almost won it near the end.

Charlton started the game positively and Konchesky set up Bartlett inside the six yard box, but he failed to hit the target.

Konchesky was at the heart of much of what was good about the visitors' attacking play with his frequent forays down the left side.

As the half progressed, Fulham grew in confidence although Charlton still had the better of the goalscoring opportunities.

Fulham's best chance of the half fell to Zak Knight, but he headed wide from Claus Jensen's well-delivered corner.

Knight continued to make his presence felt when he unleashed a powerful shot which stung the fingers of Dean Kiely.

Both sides were now creating chances in what had developed into a very open game in torrential rain.

Bartlett was again denied when his shot on the turn was saved at the near post by the feet of Edwin van Der Saar.

The South African striker had scored five goals in his previous seven games and was finding the Fulham keeper in inspired form.

Konchesky brought the best out of the Dutchman when his stinging shot was beaten away.

Charlton, chasing a Uefa Cup place, continued to have the edge against a Fulham side that had started the day only eight points above the relegation zone.

Resolute defence from the hosts continued to frustrate Alan Curbishley's side as were they were largely restricted to long-range efforts.

The game fell into a pattern with Fulham sitting back and hoping to hit on the break.

Curbishley brought on striker Jonatan Johansson late on but he failed to make an impression as Charlton were forced to settle for a point.

Fulham boss Chris Coleman:

"We cannot criticise our guys for the effort we showed but we needed a bit more guile and we didn't create enough chances.

"We have to take the positives out of the game which was a clean sheet against a very strong Charlton side.

"Also we had Steed Malbranque back and it looked like if we were going to do anything it would come through him."

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley:
"We've drawn too many games recently and we have to turn these results into wins.

"In the first 45 minutes we should have had the game wrapped up but we did not have enough to finish Fulham off.

"We're very disappointed because we need more composure when we get on top of teams so that we can cash in because we have dropped two points."
