Liverpool 0-0 Fulham
Jamie Carragher and Luis Boa Morte battle for possession at Anfield
Steven Gerrard missed a penalty for Liverpool whose Champions League challenge continued to falter.

The home side were awarded a penalty to the fury of the visitors after Bobby Petta was penalised for handball.

But Fulham felt justice was done for a harsh decision when Edwin van der Sar saved Gerrard's spot-kick.

Petta missed an open goal for Fulham who survived some late pressure, which saw Harry Kewell and Emile Heskey hit the woodwork.

The pressure on Gerard Houllier and his players was evident at a subdued Anfield as the side's Champions League challenge has faltered after two losses.

And, after a slow start to the game, the recalled Vladimir Smicer had the first chance when he was found by a Bruno Cheyrou pass but side-footed tamely at Van der Sar.

The attack enlivened Liverpool and the increasingly threatening Michael Owen shot just wide.

But it was Fulham who went closest when Volz played a one-two with Boa Morte before seeing his shot deflected off the top of the crossbar by Sami Hyypia.

There was little to shake the frustration out of the Liverpool faithful and Dudek pushing a long-range Boa Morte shot over only heightened the Anfield anxiety.

The visitors should have taken the lead when Steed Malbranque found an unmarked Collins John but he tamely shot straight at Dudek before the danger was scrambled away.

Liverpool looked to have been thrown a lifeline when referee Steve Bennett awarded the home side a penalty for an apparent handball by Petta.

The harsh decision incensed Fulham who will believe justice was done when Van der Sar saved Gerrard's spot-kick.

Gerrard failed to force in the rebound but Liverpool began to exert more pressure as they strove to make up for the miss.

Kewell hit the woodwork and Volz produced a last-ditch block to keep out an Owen shot to the agony of the home crowd.

Emile Heskey also saw a late effort come back off the post before Petta missed an open goal for the visitors as Liverpool had to make do with a point.
