Leeds opt for new stadium
![]() Fans were initially reluctant to leave Elland Road
Leeds are to go ahead with plans to build a new, multi-million pound stadium after shareholders and season-ticket holders voted overwhelmingly in favour of the scheme.
The supporters had spent three weeks considering the controversial move outlined in a letter sent to them by chairman Peter Ridsdale. There was initial resistance, and Ridsdale was subjected to a hate-mail campaign. However, of the 28,250 voting forms sent out, 18,577 were returned, of which 16,276, or 87.6%, were in favour. 'Emotional history' "I am overwhelmed by the amount of people who are in favour of this move," Ridsdale said on Friday. "I thought it would be a lot closer than that. "I am part of the emotional history of Elland Road and my memories go back a long way. "But I am also aware of the responsibilities I have, not only to my children, but also to future generations." The club have earmarked two sites, with the preferred venue located on land just off junction 45 of the A1(M) at Skelton in the south-eastern part of the city.
