Danny Whitaker scored twice from the penalty spot as Chesterfield squeezed past Southend to move five points clear at the top of League Two.

The visitors went ahead when Whitaker slotted home from the spot after Jack Hunt was brought down by Craig Easton.

Deane Smalley's neat finish doubled the lead before a 25-yard thunderbolt from Easton brought the hosts back into it.

The sides then exchanged penalties - Whitaker notching again and Barry Corr also keeping his cool for the Blues.

But Chesterfield held on to win and are now five points clear at the top of the division following's Wycombe defeat against Crewe.

The hosts, who drop to 17th spot, found themselves two down inside the first 20 minutes.

Whitaker confidently slotted home the opener from the spot before setting up Smalley, who finished well past goalkeeper Glenn Morris.

The Shrimpers improved after the interval and Easton's terrific effort looked to have got them back in to the game but just three minutes later Chesterfield's two-goal lead was restored.

Whitaker was brought down in the area by Ryan Hall and again the former Oldham man scored from the spot.

To their credit Southend continued to press, Matthew Patterson twice going close.

Corr's penalty, after he was pushed by Ian Breckin, set up a frenetic finish but the Spireites held on while Southend are now just seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"I thought for 60 to 70 minutes it was a very good performance. Obviously from what we played last week to today was very pleasing.

"Luckily we got the game in a winning position but Southend came back and we hung on. In the end we deserved to win the game.

"I just like to freshen things up as I like to play differently and it worked today."

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:
"Very disappointed, after the previous game I emphasised to the player about clearing their lines and two of the goals we lose again are slack clearances.

"You cannot give a quality side like Chesterfield a two goal lead, but we showed a bit of bite in the second-half.

"Two penalties today were criminal. Every home game we shoot ourselves in the foot and the players have not learnt their lessons."
