Southend 2-0 Brighton
Goals from Martin Carruthers and David Lee enabled Southend to open their Division Three challenge on a winning note as they beat a lack-lustre Brighton outfit 2-0.

Carruthers needed only five minutes to find the target, a downward header beating goalkeeper Michael Kuipers after Damon Searle had crossed from the left flank.

Twenty-year-old David Lee made sure of victory seven minutes from time with his first ever league goal.

Signed on a free transfer from Spurs a few weeks ago, Lee delivered a magnificent 25-yard chip which entered the net off the inside of a post.

Bobby Zamora and Richard Carpenter forced Southend keeper Andy Woodman into fine saves.

But generally it was Southend who created the better opportunities and with a little more steadiness in front of goal they would have won much more convincingly.

Southend: Woodman, Booty, Searle, Tinkler, Roget, Lee, Morley, K. Maher, Carruthers, Tolson, Houghton. Subs: Capleton, Whelan, Cross, Connolly, Forbes.

Brighton: Kuipers, Watson, Mayo, Carr, Crosby, Rogers, Hart, Oatway, Brooker, Carpenter, Zamora. Subs: Cartwright, Steele, Melton, Freeman, W. Aspinall, W. Aspinall.

Referee: H Webb (Rotherham)
