Michael Johnson's first-half goal boosted Notts County's hopes of avoiding relegation and put the brakes on Rochdale's play-off chase.
Johnson stabbed home from close range after Ryan Jarvis miss-hit a shot fell and the ball fell invitingly.
Danny Crow missed a hat trick of chances, the best of those came from a long Russell Hoult free-kick which Crow eventually lobbed wide.
Chris Basham also saw a goal-bound effort cleared off the line.
