Southend 3-1 Macclesfield
Substitute Ben Abbey ensured Southend extended their unbeaten run to 13 matches with a late strike to sink Macclesfield 3-1 at Roots Hall.

Abbey, who joined from Oxford just over a week ago, scored twice after being thrown into action in the 61st minute.

Abbey volleyed Southend ahead within six minutes of his introduction and then struck again a minute from the end after 10-man Macclesfield had equalised through Karl Munroe in the 68th minute.

Southend made absolutely sure of a victory in injury-time when Scott Forbes drove in from the edge of the box.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men after only 17 minutes when goalkeeper Tony Bullock was sent off for dissent after being booked for time wasting a minute earlier.

But the visitors still managed to look the more menacing side - until Abbey arrived on the scene.

Southend: Woodman, Booty, Searle, Roget, Whelan, Williamson, Lee, Maher, Forbes, Carruthers, Fitzpatrick. Subs: Flahavan, Abbey, Morley, Johnson, McSweeney.

Macclesfield: O'Neill, Abbey, Tinson, Munroe, Hitchen, Adams, Sedgemore, Bullock, Askey, Glover, Barker. Subs: Wooley, Wood, Keen, Collins, Whitehead.

Referee: P Alcock (Halstead).
