Adebayo Akinfenwa rocked Walsall's play-off hopes with two smart strikes which gave Northampton victory.
The powerful forward gave the Cobblers the lead in only the eighth minute with a clever lob.
Akinfenwa then headed the second in the 71st minute from Danny Jackman's cross for his sixth goal in as many goals.
But Walsall will rue missed chances, particularly skipper Tommy Mooney, who could have had a second-half hat-trick with better finishing.
