Mansfield 0-1 Barnsley

Irish defender Brian O'Callaghan scored his first senior goal to help Barnsley edge home in their crucial relegation clash at Mansfield Town.

A fifth successive defeat leaves the Stags on the brink of relegation, but Barnsley's first victory in seven games gave the Yorkshiremen a precious lifeline.

The game was a tense affair with few real chances, although Mansfield dominated possession for most of the afternoon without possessing the killer instinct.

The visitors made the crucial breakthrough on 31 minutes from a Kevin Donovan corner, which was met with a looping header from O'Callaghan 12 yards out.

Mansfield could have levelled in first-half stoppage time but keeper Matt Ghent somehow got a hand to Liam Lawrence's close-range header - his only real save of the afternoon.

However, Stags sub Colin Larkin went close when he almost squeezed a shot in six minutes from time, but the ball went wide of the far post from an acute angle.

The Tykes could have wrapped things up two minutes later when Kevin Betsy squared the ball only for Mike Sheron to lift his finish over keeper Kevin Pilkington, but Lee Williamson was there to hook the ball off the line.

Mansfield: Pilkington, Hassell, Baptiste, Eaton, Clarke, Disley, Curtis, Lawrence, Corden, Mendes, Christie. Subs: Welch, Buxton, Mitchell, Williamson, Larkin.

Barnsley: Ghent, Austin, Kay, O'Callaghan, Mulligan, Ward, Neil, Lumsdon, Donovan, Sheron, Betsy. Subs: Gorre, Rankin, Gibbs, Fallon, Parry.

Referee: C Wilkes (Gloucestershire)

Barnsley boss Glyn Hodges
"It's a big win, and an important win"
