Sheff Utd 3-0 Huddersfield
Sheff Utd will show no mercy to managerless Huddersfield
Sheff Utd showed no mercy to managerless Huddersfield
Sheffield United piled the misery on managerless Huddersfield thanks to a brace from David Kelly and a wonder-goal from Paul Devlin.

The Terriers parted company with Steve Bruce on Monday and there was no solace for caretaker boss Lou Macari's patched-together side at Bramall Lane.

Bobby Ford had the first real chance of the game on 15 minutes but his diving header from 15 yards was saved from Nico Vaesen.

Huddersfield then carved out a chance. Kevin Gallen slid in a low ball from the right but former Sunderland marksman Martin Smith failed to connect as he slid in.

The Blades then stormed onto the offensive on 35 minutes. Devlin swung in a free-kick from the left, Shaun Murphy flicked on and Lee Sandford's shot hit the top of the post.

Interval lead

Kelly's point-blank header was pushed out spectacularly by Vaesen seconds later.

But the Blades grabbed the lead on the stroke of half-time. Michael Brown received the ball on the left and picked out Kelly, whose powerful header was too good for Vaesen.

The Terriers had the first chance of the second period on 49 minutes. Former QPR striker Gallen headed an over-hit cross from the left back towards the middle but John Dyson, up from the back, hooked his shot wide.

The Blades cut through the Huddersfield defence for a second time on 64 minutes.

Devlin latched onto a Gus Uhlenbeek throw-in on the right-hand side of the box and played the ball into Kelly, with his back to goal. He returned the ball to Devlin, who drove a wonderful shot across Vaesen from just inside the area.

You won't see a better goal than Paul Devlin's, it was a cracker. And I love it that we kept another clean sheet

The game was killed off in the 74th minute when Kelly grabbed his second and United's third. The widely travelled former Republic of Ireland striker raced into the left-hand side of the box and volleyed low into the far corner.

As Town pushed on desperately they left huge holes at the back and Marcus Bent wasted the chance for a fourth goal a minute from time when he broke clear but over-hit an attempted through ball.
