Watford 3-0 Crewe

Watford made it nine games unbeaten after this convincing victory over Dario Gradi's Crewe.

After recent acquisition Espen Baardsen made an important save to deny David Wright an early goal for the visitors, the Hornets assumed control of this match and never let go.

After 21 minutes, Tommy Mooney retrieved a half-cleared corner, held off a challenge and squared the ball into the box for Tommy Smith to side-foot into the net by the near post.

The fans turned up thinking it would be easy for us, but it is never easy against Crewe. They pass the ball a lot, and it is hard to get your tempo against them
  Graham Taylor, Watford manager
The second Watford goal was far too easily conceded, with Smith breaking down the right and cutting inside. His initial cross was blocked, but Mooney retrieved the ball off a hesitant defender to set up Smith for a second cross.

Efe Sodje, attempting to chest the ball to his goalkeeper only succeeded in knocking it past him - and Gifton Noel-Williams was left with a simple tap in.

Watford's third came after 87 minutes when Micah Hyde, who scored twice in midweek against Blackburn, hit an unstoppable shot from 20 yards into the top corner of the net from another Crewe mis-clearance.

Watford: Baardsen, Cox, Robinson, Page, Palmer, Hyde, Mooney, Noel-Williams, Smith, Ward, Nielsen. Subs: Chamberlain, Ngonge, Gibbs, Easton, Foley.

Crewe: Kearton, Wright, S. Smith, Lunt, Macauley, E. Sodje, Street, Sorvel, P. Smith, Foster, Lumsdon. Subs: Walton, Collins, Trainer, Howell, Bankole.

Referee: S Bennett (Orpington)
