Portsmouth 2-1 Nott'm Forest

Portsmouth notched their fourth successive win and extended their unbeaten run to seven games after overcoming Nottingham Forest.

Ibrahima Sonko broke the deadlock by heading in Liam Lawrence's corner before Paul Anderson equalised, firing home Lewis McGugan's right-wing cross.

Lawrence struck the winner when his shot appeared to take a deflection to wrong-foot keeper Lee Camp.

Pompey were denied a third goal when Camp made a fine save from John Utaka.

Going into the game, the omens did not look good for Forest as they had lost their last five meetings with Portsmouth.

But it was the visitors who had the first chance of the match, only for Lewis McGugan to spurn the a glorious chance to add to his impressive goal haul this season.

The midfielder, who has scored seven times this campaign, was put through on goal by Radoslaw Majewski and although Jamie Ashdown parried McGugan's first effort, the Forest star then put the ball wide with the goal at his mercy.

At the other end, Hayden Mullins beat the offside trap but he fired over when one-on-one with Camp. His miss appeared less costly for Pompey as Sonko broke the deadlock in the 18th minute.

The defender rose highest from Lawrence's inch-perfect corner and powered home a header to register his first goal for the south coast club.

But only nine minutes later Forest drew level as Anderson scored with a stunning header, the midfielder at full stretch to meet McGugan's right-wing cross.

On the balance of play, it was no more than Forest deserved. And they continued to assert pressure, but failed to force Ashdown into action for the remainder of the half.

Pompey came firing out of the traps in the second half and David Nugent, who had cut a forlorn figure in the first half, was particularly threatening.

The former Preston man's 25-yard strike narrowly went over the bar and he went even closer with a chip on the edge of the area that Camp did well to tip over the bar.

Portsmouth continued to launch wave after wave of attack and it came as no surprise when Liam Lawrence gave the hosts the lead.

Utaka's ball into the box fell to Lawrence and he drilled the ball through a crowd of players and into the net.

The midfielder's strike may have taken a deflection which fooled Camp, but if the Forest keeper was at any fault for the goal, he made up for it when he saved well from Utaka's 12-yard strike shortly after.

Luke Chambers missed a good chance to equalise when he planted a header wide from six yards - and Forest succumbed to only their third defeat in the league this term.

Portsmouth move above Forest and into 10th place in the Championship table, the perfect celebration following the protracted takeover of the club finally being settled this week.
