Leicester City scored three goals in 14 second-half minutes to knock Nottingham Forest out of the top two and boost their own automatic promotion hopes.
Bruno Berner set the Foxes on their way, turning smartly to smash the ball home from a clever Richie Wellens pass.
Paul Gallagher doubled the lead with a superb free-kick with 11 minutes left and Andy King sealed the win when he deflected in a low Berner cross.
Rob Earnshaw had Forest's best chance but his first-half header hit the bar.
But apart from Earnshaw's header from a wonderful Radoslaw Makewski free-kick, Forest offered little going forward in a lacklustre match that only sparked into life in the closing stages.
The Foxes had been thumped 5-1 at the City Ground earlier in the season and boss Nigel Pearson had talked of his desire to put things right.
And although the performance was not particularly emphatic, the end result was and Pearson would have been delighted with his side's clinical finishing.
Forest had not conceded more than one goal in a league game since August but a breathless final 15 minutes changed that and also saw the Reds suffer a fourth consecutive away league defeat.
Berner set City on the way when he notched from close range after Forest failed to clear a free-kick.
James Perch wasted a great chance to draw the visitors level after Dexter Blackstock nodded the ball to him.
But Gallagher made the points safe with a delightful curling free-kick.
And it was 3-0 moments later when Lloyd Dyer combined with full-back Berner on the left and his driven cross was turned in by King.
Leicester stay in fifth spot in the Championship table but close the gap on third-placed Forest to seven points and the Foxes also have a game in hand on their east midlands rivals.
Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson: "We only came up from League One last season so to be doing what we are doing now was a big ask of the players. They deserve all the credit because they've done so well.
"People might say we scored two goals from set-plays today, but we still thoroughly deserved the win and it may answer one or two of our critics. It was a good day for us.
"We've had a decent run of form since Christmas. We have always been involved in close games and those that we have lost have been narrow defeats.
"Our fans will enjoy having the local bragging rights but the bottom line is that this was an important game to win because it means we maintain our momentum."
Nottingham Forest boss Billy Davies: "I was happy enough with the back five but the middle and front players didn't influence the game or compete enough and that was very disappointing.
"We didn't compete enough in challenges and the battles and nasty side of the game, if you like. When they scored first they simply went on to battle much more than us.
"We need to look at why we went ten months unbeaten. We will have to change things away from home and play a lot tighter. Up until they scored I thought we were the team more likely. I was feeling very comfortable and until they got their first goal I wasn't concerned.
"We were worried about set pieces before and they scored from two of them and after that first goal we just lost our discipline totally."
