Preston 2-1 Sheffield United

Matthew James scored on his Preston debut as North End bounced back from successive defeats with victory over Sheffield United at Deepdale.

James's early 20-yard strike deflected off Nyron Nosworthy and deceived goalkeeper Ian Bennett.

Jon Parkin, who earlier struck the crossbar, saw his second-half penalty saved but scored the rebound after Nosworthy had fouled Danny Welbeck.

Mark Yeates saw an effort saved by Andy Lonergan but scored from 10 yards.

"He's a good footballer and he gives us energies. We need a little bit more of that.

"I know the boy has got a good temperament but I also thought Jon Parkin was magnificent.

"It was a really good performance and to a man we were magnificent and thoroughly deserved the win."

Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell:

"We should have got something out of the game, that's for sure.

"I thought the referee had a big influence on the shape of the game.

"For the penalty Nyron Nosworthy has used his body to get between Welbeck and himself, but we had some chances and really should have finished them off."
