Lee Trundle came off the bench to score his third goal in two games as Swansea City beat struggling Plymouth at Liberty Stadium.
The visitors made it difficult for the Swans, but Trundle did his chances of staying in south Wales beyond the end of December no harm.
Trundle's fired home Gorka Pintado's cross to score after 52 minutes.
That put Swansea into a play-off slot as Plymouth's Shane Lowry was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Liverpudlian Trundle is on loan from Bristol City until the end of the month and has scored five times for his temporary boss Paulo Sousa, claiming both in the 2-2 draw at Peterborough on Saturday.
Plymouth's misery was compounded when Shane Lowry was sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time after a clash with Pintado.
Sousa's side lie fifth after being unbeaten in nine home league games and losing only once in their their last 14 Championship encounters.
Plymouth, however, are without a goal in three league starts and are are second-bottom following their 12th defeat of the season.
Swansea started well, full-back Angel Rangel almost scoring in his 100th appearance for the club with a right-footed strike.
David Cotterill had a chance to mark his first Swansea start with a goal, but the on-loan winger's right-footed free-kick was comfortably saved by Plymouth stopper Romain Larrieu.
Austrian striker Besian Idrizaj, another making his first start for Swansea, could have done better when he met Cotterill's corner 12 yards from goal but shot over the crossbar.
Swansea were almost caught cold four minutes before the break when Carl Fletcher crossed for ex-Swans striker Rory Fallon, but the New Zealand star's header was off target.
Wales Under-21 midfielder Joe Allen fired tamely wide at the other end shortly before the interval.
Sousa responded with a double substitution at the break, with strike duo Trundle and Pintado taking over from Allen and Idrizaj.
That proved a shrewd move as local favourite Trundle put them in front less than seven minutes after coming on.
Nathan Dyer beat three men before Pintado crossed for Trundle to finish off from six yards with his left foot.
Paul Sturrock's side almost responded immediately but Kari Arnason headed Alan Judge's inswinging corner wide.
The visitors had another chance after 62 minutes when Judge crossed for Fallon, but the striker headed straight at home keeper Dorus De Vries.
Arnason had another chance 15 minutes from the end, but sent his shot wide.
Sousa concedes Swans 'off day'
Swansea City boss Paulo Sousa:
"It is a fantastic result. But we didn't have a very good day. I think it's the worst of the season.
"When we have chances to score we need to score because everything becomes easier.
"When things aren't going well for us we try to change something.
"Besian Idrizaj has been working well in training and I thought it was the right move to start the game with him, but it needed changing at half-time.
"We switched to 4-4-2 and it gave us more presence in the box. We need to score goals and Lee Trundle gives us something at front."
Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock:
"This is a difficult place to come as Swansea have very good players who can pass the ball and we could have been behind in the first minute.
"But we had two great chances for Rory Fallon and we should have scored from at least one of them.
"On goal attempts we were probably on a par with Swansea but that is now three single-goal defeats in a row for us.
"I seem to say the same things after every game but we are having a club meeting on Thursday and hopefully we can go forward from there."
