Birmingham condemned Stockport to an eighth straight defeat to leave them 12 points adrift at the bottom of the First Division.

Steve Vickers put Birmingham on the road to victory after 18 minutes when he rolled a shot in from 10 yards after controlling a cross from Tommy Mooney.

County boss Carlton Palmer made several changes after the Boxing Day defeat by Barnsley.

But his side's dreadful run of form showed no signs of ending in a dismal first half.

Stockport held their own for the opening 15 minutes but the visitors soon took advantage of a good chance and Vickers broke the deadlock.

The home side had a good spell midway through the half.

But crosses from Andy Welsh and Damien Delaney were well dealt with by the Birmingham defence before Keith Briggs barely tested Ian Bennett with a weak shot.

Martin Grainger and then Curtis Woodhouse both had chances to double the lead after 34 minutes but Roget and Mike Flynn cleared their shots.

Birmingham seemed content to hang on to their lead in the run up to the break and some solid play ensured they went in for the interval with a 1-0 lead.

The second half began with a bang as Brazilian striker Marcelo extended City's lead.

He scored his 12th goal of the season after being put through by Grainger, although he did need two attempts to beat Sam Turner in the County goal.

And it was Mooney who wrapped up the points for the Blues, scoring a wonderful third from 25 yards when he curled the ball into the top corner with the outside of his left foot.
