Wrexham 0-1 Stevenage

Blue Square Premier

Stevenage Borough closed the gap on leaders Oxford to three points after beating Wrexham at the Racecourse.

Mark Roberts grabbed the game's only goal on the stroke of half time heading home from close range from a corner.

Moments earlier, Wrexham's Luke Holden saw his shot cleared off the line by Mark Albrighton.

Jon Ashton rescued the visitors in the second half with a goal-line clearance from Matthew Wolfenden's shot as they held on for maximum points.

Wrexham manager Dean Saunders: "Luke Holden was clean through, it hits the keeper's leg and it looks like it's in the net and the defender has come from nowhere - a miraculous clearance.

"Then they've gone up the other end and scored from a set-play which is disappointing right on half time.

"You need everybody bang at it and we didn't have everybody bang at it tonight to play the football to get the right service to the front men.

"So it turned into a bit of a battle in the first half. Second half we came out, totally dominated the game and had the best chances."

Stevenage manager Graham Westley:

"One-nil at Wrexham is a hell of a result. They are a fine football team and I thought it would be tough and it certainly was.

"The players put in a great effort and showed a real determination. I changed the formation to give us a little more solidity. We changed the shape to get the right players involved in the game.

"We were always looking threatening and looking to expose their weaknesses."
