Hurst's brace took his tally to three goals in three games
Gainsborough Trinity lost 4-2 at home to Southport in Blue Square North in manager Brian Little's first home game.
Striker Glynn Hurst's 32nd-minute goal cancelled out Ciaran Kilheeney's 12th-minute opener but Matty McGinn restored Southport's lead seven minutes later.
Hurst levelled three minutes into the second half but Steve Daly struck on 61 and 70 minutes to seal Southport's win.
"We played a powerful side and that was the difference between the two teams," Little told BBC Radio Lincolnshire.
He added: "Three of their goals came from set pieces into the box and we just couldn't handle that.
"We did well to get back to 2-2 but when they got their third you could see that everybody was drained. You can come back twice but coming back three times doesn't happen very often.
"Overall the better side won the game but their power and strength was the main thing we couldn't handle, they were too strong for us."
