Linnets face nail-biting finish

Matt Nolan's goal salvaged a point for King's Lynn at Gloucester

King's Lynn manager Keith Webb has been adamant for quite some time now that the Southern Premier Division title race would go right to the wire.

Lynn's draw at Gloucester on Saturday, combined with Team Bath's victory at Bromsgrove, means the Championship rivals are level on points going in to the final day fixtures.

Fortunately, the Linnets have a far superior goal difference, but the pressure will still be on to get a win at Merthyr Tydfil so they do not have to rely on results elsewhere.

Webb's side showed real character to drag themselves back from being a goal behind and Matt Nolan's late equaliser could turn out to be priceless.

It was a terrific game, only soured by the antics of Gloucester captain Neil Mustoe.

As Joe Francis was trying to compose himself for Lynn's first half penalty, which was saved by keeper Kevin Sawyer, Mustoe deliberately dug at the penalty spot with his studs. Those actions certainly cannot have helped Francis.

Apart from that the match was played in the right spirit given how much was riding on it - the draw ended Gloucester's hopes of making the play-offs - and it was nice to see all the Gloucester players come over and applaud the Lynn fans at the end.

In the Ridgeons Premier Division, Wroxham's hopes of hanging on to their crown have been put to bed.

The Yachtsmen were beaten 2-0 by Mildenhall at Trafford Park meaning it is now a straight fight between Soham Town Rangers and Needham Market for the title.

In a bitter-sweet weekend though, there was some good news for Wroxham as the reserves secured the Sterry Cup.

Their 6-0 win at Dersingham Rovers means they cannot be caught at the top of the Anglian Combination Premier.
