Champions League quarter-final
Galatasaray 3-2 Real Madrid

A staggering second-half fightback from Galatasaray stunned European champions Real Madrid at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium.

The Turks stormed back from 2-0 down at the interval with three second-half strikes to set up a mouth-watering second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Bernabeu.

Real had looked in a different class in the opening period - goals from Ivan Helguera and Claude Makelele emphasising their superiority - and the Turks looked beaten.

But a penalty from Umit Davala was added to by strikes from Hasan Sas and Mario Jardel amid amazing scenes in Istanbul.

The hosts were content to defend very deep in the opening stages and catch Vicente del Bosque's side on the break - but apart from a few long-range shots, most notably from Gheorghe Hagi, they failed to test Iker Casillas in the Real goal.

Real could have taken the lead after 28 minutes following good work down the left from Roberto Carlos and Steve McManaman, but Luis Figo shot a foot wide of Claudio Taffarel's right post with his weaker left foot.

He made amends just five minutes later by playing a crucial part in the opening goal.

The Portuguese international whipped in a delightful free-kick from the right hand side, and central defender Helguera rose unchallenged to head powerfully past Taffarel for his fifth goal in this season's Champions League.

Gala were still on the back foot when the visitors notched a crucial second shortly before half-time.

Carlos' long throw was nodded by Raul into the path of Makelele, and the French international strode past a couple of despairing challenges before driving the ball under the goalkeeper.

But Makelele turned from hero to villain just two minutes after the restart by bringing down Sas in the area, and Umit converted the penalty with ease.

The hosts poured forward - Brazilian striker Jardel coming close with two headers - before Sas sent the crowd into raptures with a deserved equaliser.

Substitute Fatih Akyel raced down the right before squaring the ball for Sas, who smashed the ball low to Casillas' right with a first-time shot.

With 15 minutes to go the comeback was complete - Akyel burst down the wing again, delivering an inch-perfect cross for Jardel to rise above Fernando Hierro and plant his header past Casillas.

Jardel had a late header disallowed - but by then the Turks' party was in full swing.
