Young Africans celebrate title win after Sunday's win

Young Africans won the Tanzania league title on Sunday, edging arch rivals Simba by just one goal on the final day of the season.

Yanga beat Toto Africans 3-0 in Mwanza to take their points tally to 49, level with Simba, who defeated Majimaji 4-1 on the last day of the competition.

But Young Africans finished as the better side with a goal difference of 25, compared with Simba's 24.

Yanga were awarded US$25,000 for winning the title and will represent Tanzania in next year's Champions League.

For the first time in many years, the two traditional rivals went into the final day of the league tied on 46 points.

Simba scored first at the National Stadium when Shija Mkina opened the scoring on 11 minutes by finishing off Emmanuel Okwi's superb work.

Simba's title hopes were boosted after Okwi extended their advantage midway through the first-half with the score still goalless in the other key match which was being played in Mwanza.

But the defending champions were dealt a huge blow when Meshack Abel conceded a penalty just before the break after bringing an opponent down in the box for his second bookable offence of the game.

He was sent off and Kassim Chilungo converted the spot kick to make it 2-1 at the interval.

Mbwana Samata and Emmanuel Okwi scored two goals in the second-half but it was not enough as Young Africans had revived themselves after the break in their clash with Toto Africans.

Two goals from Zambian import Davis Mwape and another from Nurdin Bakari sealed their comprehensive win to give Yanga the title.
