Kenya left it late but eventually qualified for the quarter-finals of the Cecafa Challenge Cup by beating Somalia 2-0 on Friday in Dar es Salaam.

They qualified as the third placed side in Group A, finishing behind Tanzania and Burundi and will now face neighbours Uganda in the last eight on Tuesday.

Substitute John Mwangi opened the scoring for the Harambee Stars on the stroke of half time and Angola-based striker Allan Wanga sealed the victory on 55 minutes.

The win was the first of the tournament for Kenya after losing to both hosts Tanzania and Burundi.

The result means Somalia crash out of the competition after losing all three of their games in Group A.

Harambee Stars coach Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee said he knew that his team would qualify.

"Now, it is serious business, I have been following Uganda and I am sure by the time we meet them I'll have found a formula to overcome them, he said.

Meanwhile, a stoppage time goal by Samuel Ghebrehine helped Eritrea beat the championship heavyweights Uganda 3-2 in Group B.

Both teams had already qualified for the quarter-finals, and the Cranes still finished top of the group despite Friday's loss.

The remaining quarter-final slot will be filled on Saturday after Group C's final match that sees Sudan taking on Ethiopia, while Tanzania will meet Burundi to decide who tops Group A.
