Hosts South Africa were eliminated from the African Women's Championship after a 2-1 defeat to Zimbabwe in Germiston on Tuesday.

The defeat for the Banyana Banyana, combined with Ghana's last gasp victory over Ethiopia in the other group A match, made it impossible for them to qualify for the semi-finals.

South Africa took an early lead after just four minutes but Zimbabwe captain Tapfuma Moyo evened the score before half time with a scorching equaliser.

Marjory Nyaumwe scrambled home the winner in the second half to give Zimbabwe their first ever success over their southern neighbours.

Ghana had good fortune to thank for their 2-1 win over a plucky Ethiopian side, cheered on by a vociferous crowd.

It was an unfortunate slip by Ethiopian goalkeeper Liya Shibru, who dropped a high ball into her own net in stoppage time, that gave the Black Queens the needed win.

It was a crushing blow for Ethiopia, whose players left the field in tears.

Ghana took the lead in the 16th minute through Akua Anokyewaa but Ethiopia drew level in the 60th minute, when Yasine Zaytuna hammered home a free kick.

Ethiopia went on to create several chances, with 16-year-old Birtukan Gebrekitos charming the crowd with her skills.

But they were unable to get past Ghana goalkeeper Sulemana Memunatu, who pulled off a string of saves.

Ghana are now through to the semi-finals, while Zimbabwe need one point to secure their place.

Zimbabwe play their last Group A game against Ghana on Friday.
