Watford sign Birmingham City defender Martin Taylor

Birmingham City defender Martin Taylor has joined Watford on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old centre-half joins the Hornets on a two-year deal after six years at St Andrew's following a £1.25m move from Blackburn Rovers.

Taylor made 117 appearances for Blues and scored three goals but he fell down the pecking order as the club returned to the top flight last season.

He had been linked with Newcastle United before boss Malky Mackay sealed his move to Vicarage Road.

Taylor was a central figure in Birmingham's 2006/07 promotion-winning season and went on loan to Norwich in 2007/08, although he returned to feature in the 2008/09 season that saw City return to the Premier League.

But the superb form of Scott Dann and Roger Johnson at the heart of Blues' defence has meant he has not figured this season.

Taylor was at the centre of controversy in 2008 after his late tackle on Arsenal's Eduardo broke the striker's leg in two places.
