The rise and fall of the Saints - Lowe resigns

Sir Clive Woodward (left)

Redknapp left Southampton in December 2005 as Southampton's fortunes refused to improve.

They finished 12th in the Championship and chairman Rupert Lowe, blamed by many fans for their relegation, left in June 2006.

Peter Crouch, James Beattie, Antti Niemi and Theo Walcott all departed and the arrival of ex-England rugby union coach Clive Woodward proved unsuccessful and divisive.

BBC Radio Solent's Tony Husband: "The Woodward experiment might have been worthwhile if they were in the Premier League but at a time of tightening belts, it was a staggering decision."
