Three goals in the second half helped Leicester overcome Hartlepool to reach the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
They took the lead shortly after the restart when Steve Howard cut in from the left before firing in a shot that trickled inside the near post.
Nicky Adams doubled the lead from 15 yards after converting a pass from substitute DJ Campbell.
Campbell was the provider again, this time for Matty Fryatt who tapped in.
Hartlepool United boss Danny Wilson told BBC Tees:
"The first 45 minutes was terrific, we played well in patches and they played well in patches.
"I felt the first goal would be crucial and unfortunately they got it and I was a bit disappointed how it went in.
"Steve Howard was a handful all night and is one of the best in our divsion, if not the Championship."
