Jersey boys suffer Scotland loss

Jersey found it hard to keep up with the high-tempo of Scotland

Jersey's Under 18's were outclassed 5-1 by Scotland's Under 16's side in the first of two matches between the sides this week at Springfield.

St Mirren striker Conor Ramsey was the star of the evening, scoring all five of Scotland's goals on Tuesday.

He opened the scoring with a 20-yard shot after 15 minutes and scored two more before half-time. He got his other pair in a two minute second-half spell.

Centre-back Luke McGlone got Jersey's consolation late on with a header.

The Scots, who are using the games are warm-ups for the Victory Shield against the other home nations, were never troubled by the island side.

Their pace and precision was too much for Jersey to live with after the opening 20 minutes.

"They had to work hard all night," said Jersey coach Dave Walsh. "But you've got to remember these boys are full-time professionals and a lot of them are involved with some top clubs in Scotland."

"They moved the ball round very quickly and they moved us round all over the place and we struggled to cope with that."

Jersey created a few chances, with Daniel Tardival hitting the bar with the score at 1-0, and Scotland coach Ross Mathie said the island side worked hard.

He said: "To be fair to the boys from Jersey stuck at their task and they got a goal and they deserved the goal. But they do find it difficult to play against us because the pace we play at in Scotland is quite a high tempo."

The Scots will play a second match against Jersey at Springfield on Thursday night.
