Juan Sebastian Veron delivered a timely message to Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United recorded a stunning victory over Juventus at the Giants Stadium.

Veron, rumoured to be a transfer target for Chelsea, was inspirational as United continued their free-scoring tour of the United States.

The English Premiership champions took the lead through Ryan Giggs' first-half free-kick and had trebled their lead within 15 minutes of the restart.

Veron combined with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to set up Paul Scholes for the second before creating the chance which Ruud van Nistelrooy brilliantly lashed home on the hour mark.

We were pleased with our own performance but in general it was a marvellous game
Sir Alex Ferguson

Pavel Nedved pulled one back for Juve but that was cancelled out by Solskjaer late on.

American international Tim Howard made a confident debut in goal for Sir Alex Ferguson's side in front of a sellout crowd of 79,005.

With yellow cards for Scholes and Roy Keane within two first-half minutes, United's commitment for the friendly was never in doubt.

They took a deserved lead after 24 minutes when Ryan Giggs, assuming set-piece duties following the sale of David Beckham to Real Madrid, stepped up to curl a direct free-kick into the corner of the net from 25 metres.

Scholes doubled the advantage 12 minutes after half-time, sliding home a low shot after excellent interplay between Solskjaer and Veron.

Van Nistelrooy added another stunning goal to his pre-season collection on 60 minutes.

Controlling Veron's perfectly weighted pass with his chest, the Dutchman turned in one movement to hit a fierce right-foot volley past keeper Antonio Chimenti and into the roof of the net.

The goal sparked 10 outfield substitutions by Juventus manager Marcello Lippi as the Italians tried to restore some dignity.

One of the substitutes, Nedved, reduced the deficit eight minutes later with a crisp drive from 20 metres.

I thought Tim Howard was superb...he showed his reflexes, his spring his agility, his courage
Sir Alex Ferguson

It spoiled a perfect debut for Howard, who saved well from Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Nicola Legrottalie.

United substitute Diego Forlan missed a clear opening moments later before making amends on 79 minutes by setting up Solskjaer for United's fourth.

But that was as good as it got for Forlan who moments later shot inexplicably wide when faced with an open goal.

United face Barcelona in their final match in the tour on Sunday while Juventus meet AC Milan in the Italian Super Cup at the Giants Stadium the same day.
