Real consider Queiroz
Queiroz may move to Real Madrid
Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz is a shock contender to replace sacked Vicente del Bosque at Real Madrid.

The Spanish club have confirmed that Portuguese Queiroz is on a short-list of candidates to replace Del Bosque, who has left the Bernabeu despite winning the Spanish title on Sunday.

"I can tell you is that Carlos Queiroz is one of the people we are thinking of," said Real president Florentino Perez. "He has the profile we are interested in."

Queiroz, 53, joined Manchester United at the start of last season and helped Sir Alex Ferguson bring the Premiership title back to Old Trafford.

If he lands the Real job, it will mean a swift reunion with England captain David Beckham, who will formally complete a 25m move to Real Madrid at the start of July.

Queiroz, a close friend of Luis Figo, was formerly coach of Portugal, Sporting Lisbon and South Africa.

Having guided South Africa to the 2002 World Cup finals, he quit and joined United last summer.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is regarded as a rank outsider for the job while Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has ruled himself out.

"I can say 100% that I will be at Arsenal next season," said the Frenchman.

"I will not be leaving Highbury to go to Madrid. I have never broken a contract in my career and I have no intention of breaking the one I have with Arsenal."

Former Real Zaragoza coach Juan Manuel Lillo, a friend of Real's sporting director Jorge Valdano, and Jose Mourinho, who coached Porto to the Uefa Cup and Portuguese title last season, have also been touted as possible replacements.

Real Sociedad coach Raynald Denoueix, who almost pipped Madrid to La Liga, is also under consideration.
