Ameobi in England reckoning
Newcastle striker Shola Amoebi celebrates one of his two goals against Bayer Leverkusen
Ameobi has impressed in Newcastle's European campaign
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed Newcastle's Shola Ameobi is in the frame for an international call-up.

Eriksson included Ameobi in a list of strikers he believes will provide England with goals in the future.

"Ameobi is much better than when I first saw him," he noted. "He is getting stronger and his first touch has improved a lot."

Ameobi has impressed in Newcastle's Champions League campaign when Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy have been missing through suspension.

Eriksson insisted he had not approached Shearer about returning to international football, although admitted he would be in the squad if available.

"You can't pick a player that doesn't want to play," Eriksson said. "The future for England cannot be Alan Shearer if you are talking about Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006."

Eriksson has to decide which strikers to use
Instead, Eriksson believes England have plenty of striking options in the shape of Emile Heskey, Francis Jeffers, Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith, Robbie Fowler, Darius Vassell, Jermain Defoe and James Beattie.

"Heskey is doing better and better and scored for Liverpool at the weekend," Eriksson added.

"Fowler is also scoring again and I'm happy about that, and Vassell did well on Saturday."

Erikson admitted he is "excited" about Rooney, and would like to see him play more for Everton.

"For me, it's a pity he plays very little but every time he comes on he seems to make things happen.

"Maybe it's good for him because he's only 17 and I know why Everton do it."

Eriksson will name his squad this weekend for the forthcoming Euro 2004 qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Turkey.
