Tom Daley to add 'hardest dive' to his new season list

Diving world champion Tom Daley will start the 2010 season by performing what he describes as one of the "hardest dives out there".

Daley has added the back two and a half somersault, two and a half twists, dive to his list for the new season in order to progress his difficulty level.

The 15-year-old will debut the dive at the British Gas National Cup that runs from 5-7 February in Sheffield.

"I am excited to use it for the first time in competition," he said.

"It is one of the hardest dives out there, we have been working on it since the World Championships."

After finishing outside the medals on his Olympic debut in Beijing in 2008, where he placed seventh in the individual final, Daley is eager to continue his impressive development ahead of the London Olympics in 2012.

National Performance Director Alexei Evangulov added: "For Tom this year is about perfecting his new list of dives.

"At the World Championships he won gold with well-executed lower tariff dives and this shocked the world of diving but now we need him to progress and perform his list well at the World Cup.

"The British Gas National Cup will provide Tom with the chance to test his new list before international competition."

The three-day National Cup event, which takes place at Ponds Forge, will see the likes of Daley and Olympians Ben Swain and Tonia Couch taking to the boards for the first time since competing at the World Championships in Rome last year.

"For me this competition is going to give me a good confidence boost," said Daley, who won gold at the World Championships in Rome last year.

"If I perform well it will give me a good platform to build on for the rest of the competitions this year.

"The main events that I am looking at for 2010 are the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games.

"Hopefully, if I compete well at the British Gas National Cup then I'll be in a position to realise my season's goals."

Daley, who won the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award for a second time in December, will also compete in the 2010 Diving World Series, which begins in Dubai in March and reaches Sheffield in April.
