England's Claire Taylor ruled out of Australia tour

Claire Taylor has been ruled out of the rest of England women's Australia tour because of a shoulder injury.

Batter Taylor damaged ligaments in her left shoulder when diving during England's second warm-up match against Western Australia on 3 January.

Taylor will take no further part in the Twenty20 series or the Ashes Test.

"Injuries happen, it was one of those freak occurrences, I landed awkwardly and there's nothing I could have done to prevent it happening," said Taylor.

The 35-year-old will now return home to England to start a rehabilitation programme.

"Representing England on an Australian tour is the ultimate goal for many players," added Taylor.

"I've been lucky enough to play in Australia several times before and I was really looking forward to performing for England out here. To have that cut short by injury is devastating.

"My preparation at home, in Sri Lanka and out here has all gone to plan and I felt in form in our two warm-up matches, so knowing I'll take no further part in the tour is tough.

"I will get stuck into rehabilitation and come back in time for the domestic season and England women's quad series in the summer."

Taylor is the second member of the original tour squad to return home, with Beth Morgan also having been ruled out of the remaining matches because of a shoulder problem suffered during the second one-day international.

Caroline Atkins, who last played for England 10 months ago, has flown to Australia as a replacement.

"This is a great opportunity for me. I have some good memories of playing out there in 2008 and am very much looking forward to playing out there again," the 29-year-old from Sussex said.

England's next match is against Australia in a Twenty20 international on Wednesday.
