Ashes: Simon Katich in shoulder injury scare

Australia have played down an injury scare to opener Simon Katich ahead of the first Ashes Test.

The 35-year-old damaged his left shoulder fielding in New South Wales's Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

"If he wakes up tomorrow and can't lift his arm it would be a worry but I'm not expecting that," said physio Alex Kountouris ahead of next week's Test.

Katich was dismissed for one in the morning session on day one.

And the left-hander was absent for New South Wales's second innings as 20 wickets fell on Wednesday, with Moises Henriques filling in for Katich alongside Test opener Shane Watson.

Although Australia have plenty of middle-order cover in their 17-man squad ahead of the first Test in Brisbane on 25 November, their opening options are scarce outside of Katich and Watson following the omission of Phil Hughes.

Katich has only recently recovered from a broken thumb sustained during Australia's 2-0 Test series defeat against India last month.

"He dived in the field and jarred up his shoulder," Kountouris told Cricket Australia's website.

"It's always a worry but it doesn't look to be a serious injury. I expect he will be okay."

Katich was not the only Australia batsman to toil on a bowler-friendly wicket at the SCG, with Watson (6), captain Ricky Ponting (7) and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin (10) all falling cheaply in the first innings.

Western Australia pair Mike Hussey and Marcus North both fell for 17 in their team's Sheffield Shield match against Victoria, but all-rounder Mitchell Johnson was unbeaten with 82 from 88 deliveries.
