Sachin Tendulkar dedicated his side's one-day series victory over Pakistan to "all the people of India".

India won by 40 runs in Lahore after setting their hosts a target of 294 in the fifth and deciding match.

"We have come so close for a long time and couldn't cross the final hurdle but there is no better place to do it than here in Pakistan," said Tendulkar.

"We held our nerve, maintained our discipline with line and length bowling, and held our catches."

He added: "We are playing here after a long time and it means a lot to us. I would like to dedicate this performance to all the people of India.

"This was down to teamwork. The juniors have really gelled with the seniors and away from home, this is another family."

India captain Sourav Ganguly was carried from the field on a stretcher after diving to stop a drive from Inzamam-ul Haq.

But he came out to greet his team-mates after his side's historic win.

"Over the last year this Indian team has worked very hard. It's fantastic to win in Pakistan, it's a phenomenal effort," he said.

VVS Laxman won the man-of-the-match award after hitting a century in India's total of 293, his 107 coming off 104 balls.

"I am really glad and happy that it came when the team needed it the most," he said.

"It was one of my best hundreds and it is always good when the team wins.

"It was not an easy wicket to bat on, but we had to remain calm and composed under pressure."

Laxman also saluted the efforts of seamer Irfan Pathan, who took 3-32 to rip the heart out of the Pakistan innings.

"It was very important we got the early breakthrough and he did that," said Laxman.

"He is a great find for Indian cricket and hopefully he will continue to fulfil his potential."

Pakistan skipper Inzamam admitted the loss of early wickets knocked a lot of the stuffing out of his side.

"The target was not tall, but we lost quick wickets in the start which made the difference," he said. "But I must admit the Indian bowlers bowled very well."

There was some consolation for Inzamam, who was made player of the series for scoring 340 runs over four games, including two centuries.
