Steven Finn and Peter Trego aim for ICC World Twenty20

Steven Finn and Peter Trego have both targeted spots in the full England squad after being named in an initial 30-man party for the World Twenty20.

The duo impressed on the recent England Lions tour to Dubai ahead of the tournament in the West Indies which runs from 30 April to 16 May.

The initial 30-man party will be cut down to a final 15 at the end of March.

"I would like to think I have a good chance of going as the back-up all-rounder," Trego told BBC Sport.

The 28-year-old Somerset player, who has starred for his county with bat and ball in recent seasons, added: "There's no cricket between now and the end of March so if there's no boot camp planned then I have to be honest that I'm probably a bit of an outsider.

"But another way of looking at it is; there are four all-rounders in that squad - Michael Yardy, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Luke Wright and myself.

"I was the one who was on the Lions tour so I would hope I have a decent shout of going as the back-up to Luke who is the one in possession of the all-rounder's shirt at the moment.

"It would be great if I was next cab off the rank but we'll have to wait and see."

Middlesex fast bowler Finn joins Trego in the first squad as one of five uncapped players - with Hampshire batsman Michael Lumb, Yorkshire spinner David Wainwright and Warwickshire seamer Chris Woakes.

And while 20-year-old Finn admits his inclusion in the squad took him completely by surprise, he hopes a strong display on the recent Lions tour in Dubai and Abu Dhabi gives him a chance of making the final cut.

The England second team took their chance to impress, winning games against their Pakistan counterparts and a one-off match against the full England side last month.

"I had a missed call when I woke up. I literally had no idea so thought it was someone having a laugh," Finn told BBC Sport.

"But I checked on the internet and it was true. It was a massive surprise to be honest but I'm honoured to be there.

"It's left to the selectors to decide whether I go in the final 15. All I can really do is keep working hard on my game.

"But I think they saw in Dubai that the attitude I have is one that shows I will work on my game.

"The standard of the England one-day sides is very strong at the moment. People are coming through and it's suddenly become a very difficult set-up to get in to.

"I've worked hard enough, I think I am ready now.....sort of!"

Paul Collingwood will lead the side in the tournament, due to start in Guyana on 30 April, with current one-day international skipper Alastair Cook omitted for the Twenty20 event.

And while Finn and Trego accept Cook's batting style might not suit the shortest form of the game, they have both backed him to fight for a place in the England Twenty20 side in the future.

"Alastair Cook is quite clearly one of England's finest batsmen - whether he's suited to the shortest form of the game is up to the coaches," Trego added.

"At this moment in time, is he the best person to open the innings for England in Twenty20 cricket? Possibly not.

"But what I do know is that Alastair's a very driven individual and he'll work very hard to get back into the selectors' minds."

Finn agreed, saying: "Alastair's proved in Twenty20 cricket that he can score match-winning knocks.

"He's made some top scores for Essex and I'm sure he'll fight very hard to get back involved with England."
