West Indies v England 1st Test

Andrew Strauss
Strauss admitted England were "entirely outplayed" by the West Indies

Shell-shocked captain Andrew Strauss said he was angered by England's display in the humiliating defeat by West Indies in the first Test.

England were all out for 51 in the second innings, their third lowest total in Test history, as they slumped to defeat by an innings and 23 runs.

"I am pretty angry with the way we've let ourselves down.

"The way we've batted is not good enough from an England team, we all accept that," said Strauss.

"The dressing room is a pretty disconsolate place at the moment.

"I don't think anyone likes to see an England team go down in that fashion, the players are all hurting pretty badly.

The skipper admitted that his side deserved to lose.

"We were entirely outplayed by a very good West Indies side and haven't done ourselves justice," he said.

"Our bowlers stuck to the task but we batted very poorly and paid the price."

Paceman Jerome Taylor's figures of 5-11 did most of the damage for the West Indies, and Strauss said they had struggled to deal with him.

"All credit to Jerome, he was straight and fast but we didn't react well," he said.

"If you want to win you need to be able to absorb pressure and come out the other side - we didn't do that."

Strauss admitted it was an embarrassing day for England's batting in particular, but refused to get too carried away in offering solutions.

"Now is not the time to be too hasty, but as a batting unit there are very few positives to come out of this," he said.

"Maybe the way Kevin Pietersen and Freddie Flintoff played in the first innings, but otherwise we've got to take it on the chin and move on.

"We felt if we batted well anything over 150 would be tough for them to chase, but we never got going in the second innings.

"They didn't give us any loose stuff to put away, didn't absorb pressure and we paid the price.

"I don't think we underestimated them but if we needed any reminding, this result will do that."
