Botham calls for Fletcher sacking
Duncan Fletcher
Fletcher has been at the England helm since 1999
Former England captain Ian Botham insists Duncan Fletcher's reign as coach must come to an end after his side crashed out of the World Cup.

England crumbled to a nine-wicket loss to South Africa to leave them with no chance of reaching the semi-finals.

"We have good players but they need a new direction," said Botham.

"Duncan has done some great things for England and we shouldn't forget that but everyone has a shelf life and his has expired."

Botham added: "The camp looks split and in disarray. I don't see how he can motivate them now.

I would be very happy if he [Fletcher] was around for the foreseeable future

Matthew Hoggard

"I hope the ECB are thinking that way and looking at change, not sitting on their hands.

"The World Cup (challenge) is over, England have been humiliated, change things now."

But England Test paceman Matthew Hoggard said he would be happy for Fletcher to remain for "the foreseeable future".

"I really do like Duncan Fletcher and I think he's done a lot for English cricket," said Hoggard.

"I think he's one of the best coaches in the world, if not the best, and he's come on leaps and bounds.

"Unfortunately, we're just going through a bad time."

Fletcher has guided England from last to second in the world Test rankings since taking over late in 1999.

But his side are languishing at seventh in the one-day standings, above just West Indies of the major Test-playing nations.
