England hand out fines to players

England have fined members of their World Cup squad for a "breach of team discipline" following Friday's defeat by New Zealand.

Team management have refused to name those involved, who went to a nightclub after the game in St Lucia.

But the BBC understands they were bowlers James Anderson, Liam Plunkett and Jon Lewis and batsman Ian Bell.

Several supporters sent e-mails to British newspapers saying they had seen the players at the nightclub.

"Those newspapers then got in touch with the team management who felt they had to react," BBC reporter Pat Murphy told Five Live.

"There is no suggestion they had too much to drink - [it's] more to do with the fact that with the necessity of turning up for international duty round about eight o'clock on Sunday morning, just over 24 hours from being at a nightclub, that was deemed too close to call in terms of representing your country," he added.

The fines were handed out following a team meeting on Saturday.

Fast bowler Steve Harmison, meanwhile, has backed England to bounce back after losing to the Kiwis.

He told the BBC: "I thought we would struggle to get wickets with the new ball but that was the one thing we did, and did it well, so the rest will fall into place."

Harmison, who retired from one-day internationals at the end of last year added: "I think we need to get used to batting on those wickets. I don't think we're really tuned in to that yet.

"I think playing against two minnows in the next week will help us as we can get big scores on the board and gain confidence."
